The Fortune Is in the Follow-Up

Ask Randy what separates the agents who make millions from the ones who quit, and you’ll get one of his most-repeated lines: “The fortune is in the follow-up.”

Most salespeople don’t lose deals — they abandon them. One call, maybe two, then on to the next shiny lead. Meanwhile the prospect who said “not right now” buys from whoever shows up in month three.

The fix isn’t talent. It’s discipline:

  • Every prospect gets a next touch on the calendar. No exceptions. If there’s no scheduled follow-up, the deal doesn’t exist.
  • A closed mouth doesn’t get fed. Ask for the appointment, ask for the referral, ask for the sale. Politely, directly, every time.
  • Repeat what works. Don’t reinvent your pitch weekly. Find the questions and the cadence that convert, then run them again and again.

None of this is complicated — and that’s the point. True intelligence lies in taking what’s complex and making it simple. Simple, repeated, and followed up on is how a ranch kid from Wyoming built one of the largest privately-held insurance agencies in America.
